Description

Klaidas Navickas is a folk artist and a craftsman of paper cuttings. He was born on 11th of October in 1962 in Raseiniai town. He is a lawyer and works in public office. He lives in Grigiskes at the moment. K. Navickas used to carve wood and metal, but in 1988 he started making paper cuttings. In 1991 the artist became a member of Lithuanian folk artists’ society. K. Navickas was recommended by Jonas Rudzinskas, who is the present chairman of the Society.

K.Navickas is a very active participant of folk art regional, national and international exhibitions. He held his personal exhibitions in Grigiskies (1991), Vilnius (1995, 1998, 2000, 2005 and 2006), Kelme and Vilkaviskis (2007), participated in the exhibition dedicated to the 40th anniversary of Lithuanian folk artists’ society. K. Navickas’ paper cuttings were exhibited in Gdansk and Moscow. During the international fair EXPO-2005 in Japan and EXPO-2010 in China K.Navickas represented Lithuanian paper cuttings and exhibited his works.

K.Navikcas’ paper cuttings have been presented in various local and foreign editions: „World’s paper cuttings” (1995),”Creations of Lithuania folk artists: Vilnius branch” (2001),”Lithuania in paper cuttings” (2003),”Lithuania in the world” (2005), etc.

In 2002 K.Navickas participated in primitive graphics workshop where old woodcarving technique was revived. Folk artists were carving linden wood and making printings. The woodprints were exhibited in the Open Air Museum of Lithuania in Rumsiskes and in “Arch” gallery during World Lithuanian song and dance celebration.
Since 2002 K.Navickas has been participating in Vilnius municipality Ethnographic trades, fine arts and fairs programme. The artist has a studio-gallery in J.Basanavicius st. 29 in Vilnius. He participates in various cultural events in Vilnius: Capital days, Balticum, Fair of Kaziukas, etc. Schoolchildren, students and everyone who is interested in folk art are welcomed to K.Navickas’ gallery where the artist presents carving and cutting history, subjects and techniques. Also visitors have an opportunity to try cutting or making woodprints themselves.

In the contest “Golden garland” K.Navickas was awarded with the III place diploma for Vilnius region in 2005. In year 2006 and 2010 he was conferred as the best fine art craftsman in Vilnius region in the same contest. In 2011 K. Navickas was acknowledged as the best craftsman of Vilnius Fair of Kaziukas.
