TAURO STR. 10, VILNIUS

The house was built in 1936-1938 as an apartment house rented by David Strugacz (architect Moses Cholem).

A four-storey facade with constructive and geometrical forms is distinguished from other buildings of the period of rationalism in Vilnius by its good proportions and interesting decoration.

In 1940-1944 in this house resided people involved with the Vilnius University: M. Biržiška, K. Jablonskis, V. Krėvė, V. Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, V. Maciūnas, G. Matoré, B. Sruoga, etc. In autumn of 1944 in the former apartment of V. Krėvė (No. 1) on the ground floor V. Mykolaitis-Putinas has settled. Literary K. Korsakas, chemist K. Daukšas, philosopher E. Meškauskas, lawyer J. Bulavas, opera director A. Zauka, writer K. Boruta with musician J. Čiurlionytė, psychologist A. Gučas have also resided in this house in later periods. On the ground floor apartment from the courtyard side musicologist O. Narbutienė, dissident member of the Helsinki Group E. Finkelstein have resided. In the same apartment in 1974 the widow of the Russian dissident and poet O. Mandelshtam N. Mandelstam and in 1975 the famous defender of human rights A.Sakharov has resided during the court proceedings of the dissident S. Kovalev. Ganddaughter of K. Korsakas J. Ivanauskaite has also lived here for a while.

In Tauro str. house No. 10 apartment 3 two Lithuanian literary classics have resided: B. Sruoga who stayed here with his family in 1943 before he was arrested and deported from the apartment to the Stutthof concentration camp. In 1945 B. Sruoga returned to Lithuania being completely weakened and sickly. After his death in 1947 V. Mykolaitis-Putinas has moved into this apartment and has resided here for twenty years during his entire late period of creation.

On February 20, 1986 V. Mykolaitis-Putinas Memorial Apartment-Museum opened its doors to visitors. In three memorial rooms (office, living room and bedroom) an authentic environment was restored. Furniture, books and pictures depict rich and intellectual ambient atmosphere. Exhibition of posters narrates of the writer’s activity while his stay in Vilnius. In the premises of the former kitchen the audio-visual room was equipped.

LIVING ROOM

Living room is a cozy space with stylish furniture and paintings of the beginning of the XXth century. Here the guests were entertained and the writer’s birthdays celebrated. The living room was also a place for family gatherings.

Table with chairs and sideboard has belonged to V. Krėvė until 1944. Table of the writer's wife and a couch is situated by the window, piano by C. M. Schröder company stands by the door.

And old German "Zeiss Ikon" camera is placed on the table, which is decorated with a bouquet of cottonweed described in V. Mykolaitis-Putinas’ novel "Altorių šešėly" (In the Shadow of Altars.)

The museum has preserved authentic tile stoves because until 1963 the apartment was only heated by stoves.

OFFICE

Office is a place for creative concentration and work by the desk featuring a large library (2877 items) and personal belongings. Listening to classical music and reading works was a common occurrence in this space. Here V. Mykolaitis has spent is lone hours and time with university colleagues, writers and friends.

BEDROOM

Bedroom features authentic exhibits of Karelian birch furniture and writer’s stick. Periodicals, books, papers and pens used to lie often on the bedside table next to the medicines. Poet has once revealed that many poems were born here during his illness period with prominent motives of insomnia and anxiety.

POSTER EXPOSITION

Exposition narrates about the writer's life and work in Vilnius. It features books, photographs, copies of manuscripts grouped under the main themes of V. Mykolaitis-Putinas’ fields of interests as poet, translator, scholar, novelist and educator. Music and his contemporaries were also an integral part of his life. Post-mortem gypsum mold of the writer's hand created by painter N. Petrulis is also presented.

AUDIO-VISUAL ROOM

An audio-visual room is installed in the former kitchen in which only the authentic floor tiles have remained. Next to the kitchen there is a small room currently used as workroom for the staff.

In 2009 deteriorating materials from V. Mykolaitis-Putinas archive in a museum (audio cassettes, tapes, video recordings) were recorded to modern media. This museum’s project was sponsored by the Culture Support Fund. Visitors have an access to the following records:

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Educational program for high school students MANO MĖNESIAI (MY MONTHS)
While reading poems from the cycle of poems "My months" the students are encouraged to guess which month is described. The task is aggravated by deletion of the names.

Educational program for visitors of various ages ŽAIDŽIAME POEZIJĄ (PLAYING THE POETRY)
Activity EILĖRAŠTIS-DĖLIONĖ (POEM-PUZZLE)
Education participants are given boxes with the words of poems. Visitors are putting the puzzle together thus creating their own poems or verses. After finishing the creative process, all participants read their verses aloud. Later they can read poem with the same words created by the author of children's books.

Educational program for elementary school students ATRASK PATARLES IŠ NAUJO (DISCOVER PROVERBS AGAIN)
Participants receive sheets with pictures and a few proverbs or sayings. They have to match the proverb to each drawing.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
The Museum participates and hosts various cultural evenings including "Prancūzų kultūros atšvaitai Lietuvoje" (French Cultural Reflections in Lithuania), "Kas yra pašaukimas?" (What is a Calling?), international events and local city events, including the "Muziejų naktis" (Museum Night) and the "Tebūnie naktis" (Let There Be Night) festival.

Museum organizes contests of students’ works (drawings, essays, essays), hosts philosophical and ethical workshops of the club "Renesansas" (Renaissance) professionals, led by the philosopher K. Stoškus.

The museum is the residency of Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas Support Fund which aims to support the research of V. Mykolaitis-Putinas’ art, promotion, ideas and case studies developed by the poet and their dissemination in the Lithuanian culture system.
