Description

Naujininkų St. 24

The Old Believers' house of prayer is situated in Naujininkai suburb, near the only cemetery of the Old Believers in Vilnius , between Tyzenhauzų and Naujininkų streets.
1825 m. The Old Believers and merchants Avidaburskis and Novikovas bought a lot of land here and built wooden houses of prayer by their own means. The cross of the old believers on the roof made the only difference between the house and other living houses. The merchant of Vilnius Pimonovas built a brick building, already similar to orthodox churches, with a beautiful tower and an onion-shaped roof just before Tsar's prohibition to build houses of prayer for the old believers in 1900. The interior was built following the example of an orthodox church, but there was no altar and the iconostat was constructed near the wall. The walls had numerous ornaments.

Leonidas, the son of Pimonovas, who miraculously remained alive, returned to Vilnius after 12 years, had passed from the revolution in Russia. He graduated Vilnius University in 1937 and inherited the property of his father (his parents died of epidemic diseases in Russia). He also lived in Paris and had both Lithuanian and French citizenship. He founded his and his wife's fund (Eugenija and Leonidas Pimonovai Alzheimer disease support fund) in the capital of Lithuania in 1997. Eugenija Pimonova who died of this disease in Paris in 1996 was buried in the Old Believers' cemetery in Vilnius.

Academician L.Pimonovas was a famous physicist, inventor, and honourable member of research organizations of different countries of the world. Eugenija and Leonidas Pimonovai Alzheimer Disease Support Fund office was opened on December 7 th at Tilto St. 35. Leonidas Pimonovas died on March 24 th 2000 in Vilnius and was buried near his wife's grave in the cemetery of the Old Believers.
